For those of us in Hawaii and the Asia Pacific, guanxi is more than just a word. On the mainland this business cultural practice is widely misunderstood.

Our facilitated discussion will focus on the dynamics guanxi plays in contracts, connections and the perspectives professionals bring to the table, and how disparities and commonalities can be managed to achieve win-win solutions for all.

Facilitating this forum is Hawaii resident Jeffrey Bingham Mead. He is the host of the Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim Show on 1490 WGCH.com in Greenwich, Connecticut. He is the founder and president of Honolulu-based The Pacific Learning Consortium, Inc. Mead is also the co-founder and president of History Education Hawaii, Inc., the non-profit Hawaii council allied with the National Council for History Education (NCHE). For over twenty-two years he has divided his time between Greenwich and the Asia-Pacific. Mead is a respected university-level professor to international students from Japan, South Korea, China and other East Asian nations in the areas of history, business communications, English as a Second Language (ESL), hospitality and tourism.

In September 2015, Mead was an invited guest by the Chinese government to attend the 70th year Victory Day celebrations commemorating the end of World War II. His late-father, Herbert Bingham Mead, was a U.S. ‘China Marine’ stationed in Beijing 1945-1946. The post WWII China Marines are the subject of a book project.

In May 2017 leaders of Greenwich, Connecticut USA and Hangzhou, Zhejiang PRC signed a sister-city agreement, establishing the beginnings of a relationship between the two wealth and finance centers. Mead was a featured keynote speaker at the ceremony held in Greenwich.
